CHAPTER 16

Eager to focus on opening the flash drive, Bobbie slid the keyboard closer to her.

“Bailey.” She typed the dog’s name, then sighed as the password was rejected. “I really thought that would be it.”

“Bailey wouldn’t satisfy most password requirements.”

“Oh, you’re right. Let’s try a few numbers.” Bobbie began typing in a variety of numbers after Bailey’s name. After several tries, her shoulders slumped. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe this is pointless.”

“You don’t strike me as someone who gives up very easily.” Matt rested one hand on her shoulder as he peered at the computer. “Try a few more, then we’ll call it a night.”

“Okay, let me see. Maybe the numbers come first. Rachael said Bailey was three. Let’s try what his birth year might be and his name.” Bobbie typed in the four numbers, then Bailey’s name. An instant later, a file list popped up on the screen. “What?” She gasped as she bolted up out of the chair, nearly knocking over Matt who’d leaned in to take a closer look at the screen.

Matt chuckled as he avoided her unintentional headbutt. “I have to be careful around you.”

“I’m guessing I could say the same about you.” Bobbie looked up at him and immediately found the pride in his eyes to be yet another reason to smile at him.

“You did it.” Matt rubbed her shoulder and continued to look through the files. “Let’s get into these. Maybe there’s something I can use to finally blow Colton out of the water.”

“I guess you want your chair back?” Bobbie stood up and slid it over to him.

“That’s all right. You sit. I’ll grab another one. We can look at it together.” Matt pulled a chair over beside her and sat down in it. “Paxon wanted to meet with me, but he was killed before we could. I wonder if this is what he wanted to tell me about.”

As they looked through the files and finished the remainder of their meals, Bobbie couldn’t help but notice just how close he was to her. The warmth of his body heat, and the faint scent of his cologne made it hard for her to focus on the files that he opened. Which didn’t matter too much, because they mostly contained scientific terms that she didn’t have a grasp on.

“These are the results from the tests he’d been running, and they’re really troubling. He’d told me about some of the results, but it looks like he’d done a lot more testing since we last spoke.” Matt opened another file. “It looks like he was about ready to submit all this to an outside lab. See how he has every test result listed here with the date and time of the collection?” He pointed to the list. “This is a document he was ready to send.”

“And that’s what got him killed.” Bobbie sighed as she looked it over. “At least, it might have been.”

“You have some other theories? I’m going to print this.” Matt stood up and walked over to the printer.
